Stuart graduated from St John’s College, Cambridge in 1980 with a degree in Mathematics. He trained at Duncan C Fraser & Co before its acquisition by Mercers. In 1988 Stuart established Punter Southall with Jonathan Punter; this remains the most successful start-up in the actuarial consultancy market for over 25 years.
Although now Chairman of Punter Southall Limited, the Group’s actuarial consultancy business, Stuart remains much involved with client work and retains several large Scheme Actuary appointments. He also has an increasing number of employer-only appointments. He has extensive knowledge of mergers and reconstructions of large schemes, liability reduction exercises and has been involved in the winding up of many schemes. Several of his clients are European or American corporations encountering UK pensions for the first time.
Stuart is the co-author of a prize-winning actuarial paper (on scheme wind-ups) and has presented to the Association of Pensions Lawyers’ annual conference and on their introductory pensions course. In July 2005 he qualified as a CEDR Accredited Mediator and has presented on mediation to a joint ACA/APL meeting and scripted an accompanying role play on a scheme funding dispute.
Stuart was an early editor of “The Actuary” magazine, has marked professional examination papers and sat on the Ethics Committee of the Association of Consulting Actuaries. He is currently an Investigating Actuary (under the Institute of Actuaries’ disciplinary scheme) and the ACA’s Honorary Treasurer.
Stuart is a non-executive director of Neptune Investment Management Limited.
