The DWP has proposed a regulatory review of pensions legislation. However, before we look at any changes in detail, we need to be clear on the fundamentals of exactly what the defined benefit pensions promise means to different stakeholders whether they be members, trustees or employers, venture capitals, trade unionists or industry professionals.
In June 2003, changes to legislation made the pensions promise effectively inescapable. Keeping promises is a fundamental part of any successful economy, but are there arguments for being able to renegotiate that promise in the case of defined benefit pension schemes?
The panel discussion will be chaired by David Willetts MP, and there will be an opportunity for the audience to ask their own questions.
The panel will look at the fundamental issues, including:
- the nature of the pensions promise,
- the existing pensions promise,
- the future pensions promise,
- the options that arise from the promise.
Panel members will be confirmed shortly but we expect it will include representatives for employers, consumers, trustees, trade unions, politicians, lawyers, venture capitalists and consultants.
