Pensions administration

 Overview

Punter Southall’s administration service encompasses a variety of different disciplines, from accounts and payroll to administration and technical support. This provides our employees with the opportunity to transfer into a different discipline if they develop sufficient interest and skills to do so, thereby offering progressive career opportunities within the organisation.

We provide a comprehensive training and development programme within the ‘Investor in People’ framework.  We offer full support to all our employees wishing to sit professional qualifications. The majority of our administration employees are either studying for or have attained professional qualifications established under the Pensions Management Institute.  Further details of the qualifications can be found on the website www.pensions-pmi.org.uk.

Our teams have a mixture of trainee and more experienced employees, overseen by a team leader. We operate a half yearly appraisal system, focusing on both personal and business development. This provides all employees with the opportunity to discuss development opportunities and work towards clear objectives.

The pension industry is subject to regular legislative changes and, in order to continue providing a high quality service to our clients, it is vital that all our employees are able to react to these changes. Our dedicated technical support teams, with representatives from each discipline, keep abreast of these developments and provide all our employees with the training the need.

Punter Southall is a successful, innovative organisation that is growing fast within the pension administration market. Our success is down to the quality, commitment and customer focused attitude of our employees, many of whom have been with us from the start of their careers.

Interesting fact!

Punter Southall helped me achieve a massive personal ambition; to walk the 630 mile South West Coastal Path in aid of a local Children’s Hospice.

Like most people outside the industry, as a carefree university student I had never heard of Punter Southall.  To be fair, I had never heard of an actuarial consultancy!  However, I was offered a year-long admin placement in July 2001 which I gamely accepted, and it wasn’t long before I realised what a fun, social, dynamic company I had stumbled into. I was delighted to be offered the opportunity to return on a full-time basis after my final year at university.  Eight years later, having worked my way up through the ranks, I have recently been promoted to Senior Consultant and transferred to our office in Birmingham which is a brilliant new challenge and very exciting!

The role of pensions administrator is an unusual one.  On the one hand, certainly in the earlier years, it involves a significant amount of administrative tasks.  However, over time as my technical knowledge has developed at Punter Southall, the myriad of activities I have been involved in has become surprisingly diverse.  One of the great things I have found about Punter Southall is that even seemingly innocuous talents are recognised and nurtured, and can lead to some unexpected opportunities.  As an example, my love for pub quizzes, and my history of amateur dramatics, led to the Marketing Committee asking me to host a quiz evening for local clients and contacts.  This then led to me being asked to direct a role play style presentation at a regional pensions conference, and to appear in some training videos for a new web-based pension projection tool – move over Howard from the Halifax ads!  Beyond that, Punter Southall also helped me achieve a massive personal ambition, by supporting me (and permitting me to take an 8-week sabbatical) so I could walk the 630 mile South West Coastal Path in aid of a local Children’s Hospice.

The general day job of a pensions administrator is a balance between performing calculations, issuing letters, providing advice, reporting back to clients, and explaining often quite complex concepts to scheme members over the phone.  Most administrators have different strengths, be they numerical, linguistic, presentational or organisational. At Punter Southall all those strengths are utilised and appreciated.  We work in teams and support each other, and I have always felt a strong sense of camaraderie and friendship both within the teams and the company as a whole.  The pensions landscape is constantly changing, meaning there are always new things to learn.  Furthermore, an administrator works on a wide range of pension schemes performing a variety of roles, and, every time we win a new client, there is another set of scheme rules, procedures, and people to become familiar with.  That said, my team is an ever-present calming influence and there is an excellent support structure in place throughout the company. Training (both explicit and on-the-job) is superb.  Finally, everyone is so approachable that you never feel isolated.

I must admit that, in spite of the excellent career development, fantastic working environment and wide variety of activities you can become involved in, the biggest reason why I work, and have worked, at Punter Southall for so long is the people here.  As well as being a great bunch to work with, they are also a great bunch to play with, whether it be at office socials (such as the excellent Christmas/Summer parties), as part of the usually defeated but always optimistic cricket team, or just on a Friday night when many will be found socialising in local establishments.

Basically, coming to work at Punter Southall was a great decision for me.  If you’re ambitious and prepared to work hard as part of a team, then the opportunity to develop and progress is there, and I do not think there could be a better environment in which to work.  In short, Punter Southall is both Pleasantly Social and Professionally Satisfying, and provides a real Platform for Success.  It really is the perfect Place to Start!

Interesting fact!

I recently did a road trip around the entire circumference of the USA, and parts of Canada. Passing through 33 states in 2 months, we slept in a tent and the journey clocked up over 28,000 miles in our van.

I joined Punter Southall shortly after I graduated from university. I had a small amount of previous experience in pension administration, and Punter Southall seemed like the perfect place to build on this experience and further my career.

The work undertaken in pensions administration is extremely varied. I work on three different pension schemes for three different clients. Every scheme is different to the other, and each client has different requirements for the work they need us to do, so it is always a challenge to make sure you juggle everything correctly. The work I do can differ every day, from day-to-day general administration for members of the pension scheme, to preparing the monthly cashflow and completing the paperwork for investing money from the scheme bank account. We are also required to prepare administration reports for the scheme trustees and to liaise with them and other third parties.  Legislation in pensions is constantly changing and the rules of the pension schemes may also change so it is important to always stay up to date with what is going on.

Punter Southall provide fantastic support to help you develop your career. I am in the middle of my Diploma in Pensions Calculations (DPC). When you are studying for an exam, everyone is given a study mentor who has completed the DPC already and we prepare for the exams in groups. This is really helpful and something that isn’t offered in all companies. We are also given study leave, which makes a huge difference as it isn’t always easy to juggle work life with home life and study at the same time. This has made the exam process relatively pain-free.

One of the great things about working at Punter Southall is the people who work here. From a professional perspective, everyone has the same mind-set of working hard and to high standards.

Socially, Punter Southall is a brilliant place to work. I work in the Guildford office, in the middle of the town centre. The office is not too big and not too small, which makes it easy to get to know people. Everyone working here is very friendly and there are always lots of social events going on. There are big events such as the Christmas party and the Summer event, and smaller things like team socials. I joined the cricket team shortly after joining, which is a good way to get to know people - and a good way to spend the evening during the summer.
